Kali Linux: Installation(Bootable USB Drive)
Getting started with Kali installation, you have a lot of options to choose from. You could either choose to directly install it on your Hard Disk, Dual Boot it with Windows or Mac, or even use a Virtualization software like VMware or VirtualBox to run Kali or damn, you could even get kali fired up on a Raspberry Pi and wreak havoc! but that’s something for another day. Yet, the best and fastest way is to get Kali up and running is booting it “live” from a USB Drive as a Bootable Kali USB . Why? let’s see!
Why Bootable Kali USB?
To start with, it’s a breeze to set up, it’s fast and the best part? it’s right there with you wherever you go! Even More?
-> Use of Host Hardware: Efficiently use all of your System resources like RAM, CPU, etc.
-> Non-destructive: Meaning it won’t affect your host’s hard drive or OS in any way.
-> Customizable: You can practically roll your own custom kali image and fire the bad boy up!
-> Potentially Persistent: Just a little but of extra effort and you can configure it with “persistent storage” to save your changes across reboots.
Let’s get on with the Installation!
Things you’ll need:
1. A Pen Drive with 4gb or more of space(8gb or more preferred)
2. A Program to install Kali on your USB Drive: Win32 Disk Imager
3. Kali ISO: Latest Kali image(2018.3a as of now) 32/64 bit version according to your OS(If unsure, go with the 32 bit, it’ll work for both) : 64 Bit | 32 Bit
Making the Bootable Kali USB:
The process is as easy as 1 2 3, so let’s go!
1. Start the Win32 DiskImager software.
2. Click on the file icon and select the Kali ISO you just downloaded
3. Select the correct drive partition of your USB in the Device option.
4. Select Write.
Finally your Bootable Kali USB is ready to roll!
Booting from the Bootable Kali USB
1. Finally, reboot your computer and press ESC or F12(usually!, if not just give a quick lookup on google) multiple times while the laptop is booting to open the BIOS menu.
2. Head over to the Boot Menu and move your USB to the top from the BOOT Device Priority option(Using arrow or F5 & F6 keys) so as to boot from the usb and F10 to save the changes and continue.
Initial Kali Boot Screen with numerous options is loaded(Awesome! we’re almost there)
3. Now choose the Live option(1st) from the menu and enter the credentials.(Your boot screen might look different, don’t worry!)
The default username is root and the password is toor. Enter those and Poof! Finally you are all set with your Pocket Hacking Device and it’s to wreak havoc!
Keep in mind that all the changes and configurations done in the Live mode are Non-Persistent, meaning the changes are only preserved till reboot. After a reboot or Shutdown, all changes will be gone! But that can be a good thing as a novice if you see, you can do absolutely anything with it and if something goes wrong, just a reboot and it’s all Sunshine and Rainbows again!
And calm down you, we can absolutely configure it to reflect and save the changes if we want, and here you go: Kali Linux USB Persistence
